Herbert Schöchl

Herbert Schöchl, senior physician at the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at AUVA Unfallkrankenhaus Salzburg, was head of the research group for trauma-induced coagulation disorders at LBI Trauma from 2012 to 2022. Since his retirement, he has acted as a scientific advisor in the Translational Anaesthesiology and Pain Medicine Group.

In the course of his career, Herbert has held various key positions, including senior consultant in the field of cardiac surgery from 1992 to 1996 and senior consultant at the Department of Vascular Surgery from 1996 to 1997. He was also deputy head of the Salzburg emergency system from 1992 to 1998 and worked for many years as an emergency doctor on the rescue helicopter. His habilitation in the field of anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine ultimately led him to head the LBI research group on trauma-induced coagulation disorders.

An outstanding aspect of Herbert’s career is his continued dedication to emergency medicine. His pioneering discoveries in haemorrhage management have resulted in over 200 scientific publications over the years and have been published in prestigious journals. Among other things, Herbert has established an internationally recognised method of haemorrhage management: his treatment, known as ‘The Austrian way’, has found its way to the specialist literature and is used worldwide as best practice.
