Lodwick Award for novel treatment of lumbar axial back pain

The Lodwick Award is presented annually to the author of the paper with the largest impact in the field of musculoskeletal radiology, medicine or physiology. This year, the award was handed to Dr. Stephan Becker (LBI Trauma in collaboration with Medimpuls) for his clinical study on the ablation of the basivertebral nerve (BVN) for the treatment of back pain, published in The Spine Journal.

The winner of the Lodwick Award is chosen by the Musculoskeletal Division of the Department of Radiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, out of thousands of papers published in more than 20 general and subspecialty journals.

In his study, Stephan Becker reported that the ablation of the BVN in patients with lumbar axial back pain arising from degenerative disc disease significantly improves the outcome early in the follow-up period, with persistent improvement during the 1-year follow-up.
