Triple success at the Austrian Trauma Days 2024
The Austrian Trauma Days 2024 were a great success for our institute, as three outstanding researchers – Annette Vaglio-Garro, Jakob Schanda, and Nadja Ring – received awards in recognition of their contributions to trauma research. Annette was honoured with the Günther-Schlag Award for her findings in traumatic brain injury recovery, while Jakob secured third place in the Open Access Förderpreis. Our colleague Nadja Ring, representing LBG SHoW, earned the Best Experimental Presentation Award by the Austrian Society for Trauma Surgery (ÖGU).
Günther-Schlag award for Annette Vaglio-Garro
Annette Vaglio Garro, PhD candidate in the Molecular Basis of Organ Failure and Regeneration group under the supervision of Andrey Kozlov, received the esteemed Günther-Schlag Abstract Award from ÖGU. In her presentation, Annette shared her latest findings on the role of vitamin B1 in treating neuronal damage following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Her research demonstrates that vitamin B1 enhances the oxoglutarate dehydrogenase complex activity, thereby helping to prevent neuronal death caused by toxic extracellular glutamate.
Open Access Förderpreis for Jakob Schanda
We also celebrate Jakob Schanda, who earned third place in the Open Access Förderpreis for his study, “Comparison of Outcomes After Arthroscopic Superior Capsule Reconstruction Versus Arthroscopic Partial Repair or Arthroscopic Debridement for Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tears.” His research provides valuable insights into the relative effectiveness of different surgical approaches for rotator cuff repair, informing decision-making in orthopaedic care.
Best Experimental Presentation Award for Nadja Ring
Our colleague and friend, Nadja Ring from LBG SHoW, was recognised with the ÖGU’s Best Experimental Presentation Award for her study on the p-rpS6 zone, recently published in Developmental Cell. Her research identifies the p-rpS6 zone as a critical marker that visualises and measures tissue response following wounding.
The Austrian Trauma Days, hosted annually by the Austrian Society for Trauma Surgery (ÖGU), is one of Austria’s most significant events in trauma care, bringing together experts of both clinical as well as translational research to share advancements in trauma medicine. This year’s achievements reflect our institute’s dedication to keep pushing the boundaries of trauma research.
