LBI Trauma at TERMIS 2025 in Freiburg

TERMIS 2025 in Freiburg was a great success: with around 1,300 participants and a diverse program, the meeting of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Society offered plenty of opportunities to exchange ideas, gain new inspiration – and reconnect with old friends. LBI Trauma continued its long-standing ties with TERMIS. A special moment: our former director and current senior postdoc Heinz Redl was honored in the opening talk on the history of the society.

Impulses for clinical translation

Across several thematically broad sessions, LBI Trauma researchers presented current contributions to the clinical translation of regenerative therapies. An expert panel, moderated by Susanne Wolbank and Paul Wieringa, brought together representatives from European professional societies (EWMA, ESB, ESAO, EORS) to discuss how interdisciplinary collaboration is driving progress in the field of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs).

There were also valuable insights into the regenerative potential of perinatal cells and their secretome: In a session organised by Susanne Wolbank together with Antonietta Silini and Auriane Drack, she presented the latest findings on the mechanisms of action of these cell products. Strong contributions from the Cluster community included Mario Gimona (PMU Salzburg), who highlighted translational challenges in secretome-based therapies, Karl Schneider (MedUni Vienna), who presented new developments in placenta-derived ECM hydrogels, and LBI Trauma PhD student Nefertiti Chaves Solano, who shared her work on pro-regenerative miRNAs from the human amniotic membrane.

New biophysical therapies and perspectives on company formation

Another program highlight was the session on biophysical therapies for tissue regeneration, chaired by Paul Slezak. Presentations included direct cardiac shockwave therapy (Heinz Redl), 3D simulation methods for optimized therapy delivery (Paul Slezak), a research framework for new indications (Cyrill Slezak), and photobiomodulation and stem cell-based chondrogenesis (Conny Schneider). A particular highlight was the international exchange on light-based approaches to strengthening artificial skin models (Yasuyuki Tsunoi, Japan).

How to successfully bring scientific innovations into practical application was the focus of a session on company formation in the TERM field, led by LBI Trauma Director Johannes Grillari. Leading experts shared practical insights into how scientific ideas can be transformed into market-ready solutions – an important exchange for all those looking to take their innovations into clinical practice.

Many thanks to the organisers for an excellently prepared and inspiring event. We are already looking forward to the next edition!
