Johannes Grillari in “Sterben für Anfänger” (“Dying for Beginners”)
The new documentary Sterben für Anfänger (“Dying for Beginners”) by science journalist and filmmaker Kurt Langbein explores the scientific, medical, and personal questions surrounding our mortality. Among those featured in the film is Johannes Grillari, Director of LBI Trauma.
The film begins with Langbein’s own diagnosis of terminal cancer. What initially started as a professional topic thus becomes a deeply personal and existential question. On his journey, Langbein explores different perspectives on dying — from intensive and palliative care to medical ethics and psycho-oncology, as well as spiritual traditions and near-death experiences.
Along the way, he speaks with doctors, researchers, end-of-life care professionals, and people who have themselves already faced death. The film combines personal experiences with scientific, medical, and philosophical questions, addressing themes such as fear, hope, self-determination, and dignity.
Johannes Grillari, Director of LBI Trauma, also shares his perspective in the film. His contribution adds a scientific perspective on the biological foundations of ageing and life, while connecting these insights to the broader questions raised by the documentary.
Sterben für Anfänger is therefore not only a film about dying, but also about how we live with the knowledge of our own mortality. The film will be released in Austria on November 6, 2026.
