Conny Schneider on the podcast “Aftershock – still aLive”: On science, sepsis, and blind spots in the healthcare system

What happens when lab knowledge meets systemic questions? In the podcast “Aftershock – still aLIVE”, Dr. Conny Schneider, Head of Science Communication at LBI Trauma and coordinator of the BEATSepsis consortium, talks about her path from cell research to healthcare topics – and why good research sometimes starts with something as simple as calling a professional association.

For several years, Conny Schneider worked in experimental research. She completed her bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD in the field of cartilage regeneration. Over time, however, she felt the need to look beyond the sterile lab bench. In the podcast, she describes how an interdisciplinary project on chronic wounds gave her a new, system-level perspective and made clear how much need there is for communication, coordination, and structural support. Rather than purely technical solutions, questions of diagnostics, patient guidance, and equitable care moved into focus.

Today, Conny continues to combine scientific content with societal issues, both within the BEATSepsis project and in her broader role in cross-institutional communication. In conversation with the two podcast hosts, both of whom have personal experience with sepsis, she talks about the often underestimated complexity of the condition, common myths such as the “red streak,” and the widespread desire among patients to be taken more seriously by the healthcare system. The podcast is a collaboration between Sepsishelden and the Sepsis Stiftung, two organizations dedicated to raising awareness of sepsis and giving more visibility and weight to the voices of those affected.

By the way: Conny was a guest on another podcast earlier in 2025

In the “Drachentöter” podcast, she discusses how she got into science, the surprisingly dynamic structure of our bones, and what aging means for the body. Along the way, the conversation touches on the pressure to publish, society’s perception of science – and why immortality might not be such a great idea after all.
