Bone group receives WWA Healthcare grant for “CeraSilk”

Our Bone Group at LBI Trauma has been awarded a WWA Healthcare grant by Wiener Wirtschaftsagentur. Their project CeraSilk combines ceramic 3D printing with a functionalized silk membrane to create next-generation bone implants. The goal: to provide patients with large non-union bone defects a more effective treatment that requires only one surgery, instead of the two needed in the induced membrane technique, today’s standard approach.

By pairing customizable, highly biocompatible ceramic scaffolds with a silk-based periosteum substitute, Regina Brunauer and her team aim to build load-bearing, bone-like implants that can make trauma care less invasive, more accessible, and more successful for a broader range of patients. Beyond patient care, CeraSilk also strengthens Vienna’s position in advanced materials and additive manufacturing research, driving innovation from the lab toward real-world impact.
