Endothelial Cell Group

Endothelial Cells and Angiogenesis

The endothelial cell group is headed by Wolfgang Holnthoner, PhD. Being trained as endothelial cell biologist, he and his team are interested in the basic functions of these cells in vasculogenesis, angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis. Moreover, in a translational setting the team is working on vascularization strategies to engineer artificial vascular structures and to regenerate existing blood and lymphatic vessels. Furthermore, the group spans many aspects of endothelial cell biology:

- Isolation of endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) from peripheral blood and fat tissue

- Co-cultures as tools for prevascularization for Tissue Engineering

- De- and recelluarization of natural vascular structures

- The role of endothelial cells in blood coagulation
