The mission of the Austrian Workers’ Compensation Board (AUVA) Trauma Research Center is to improve diagnostic and therapeutic measures in emergency medicine and trauma surgery. Due to an interdisciplinary collaboration between pre-clinical and clinical expert teams, well-founded results from basic clinical research can be quickly and directly translated to the application in patients. Therefore, the LBI Trauma “supplies” on the one hand the 7 trauma hospitals and 4 rehabilitation centers of the AUVA and on the other hand the general trauma field with novel findings and innovations. Ongoing research projects focus on the two main branches: Intensive Care and Tissue Regeneration. Furthermore, the LBI provides Competence Centers on up to date biomedical technologies and methods within their facilities.

Intensive Care Research areas include:

  • Sepsis - Trauma - Shock
  • Trauma-induced Coagulopathy
  • Molecular Basis of Organ Failure and Regeneration

Research areas in Tissue Regeneration are:

  • Neuroregeneration
  • Cartilage Regeneration
  • Bone and Ligament Bioengineering and Regeneration
  • Local Hemostasis and Soft Tissue Regeneration
  • Shoulder Regeneration
  • Cell-based Therapies
  • Vascular Biology
  • Tissue Engineering and Rejuvenation
  • Photobiomodulation

The Competence Centers encompass:

  • BioImaging
  • Histology and Electron Microscopy
  • MechanoBiology
