In course of his thesis “The role of fibrinolysis inhibition in engineered microvascular networks in multi-organ-chips” he was working on the simulation of vascularized tissue on organ-on-a-chip devices. Therefore, umbilical cord derived endothelial cells and adipose-derived stromal/stem cells are embedded in fibrin gel. To keep the network intact during the perfusion with basal medium, fibrin degradation by the cells has to be inhibited. Severin’s system enabled the simultaneous cultivation of multiple tissue types on one chip. Thus, the influence of novel pharmaceutical substances on various organs can be simulated in vitro.
